Plastic Bags and Other Tanglers

Plastic bags, shrink wrap, hoses, cords, and loose string can wrap around screens, rollers, gears, and belts inside sorting equipment. Wish-Cycling

Wish-cycling is putting something in the recycling bin because it appears recyclable. For example, a foil-backed wrapper may look like metal but contain multiple material layers that the program does not accept. Bagged Recyclables

Unless the recycling provider requires bags, recyclables should generally be placed loose in bins so they can be identified and sorted. Cross-stream mixing occurs when a recyclable item is placed in the wrong recycling stream. Glass in a paper-only program or containers in a cardboard-only bin can contaminate the stream even when those materials are recyclable elsewhere. Clear labels and consistent container placement can help employees reduce recycling contamination by separating materials correctly.

1: Conduct a Waste Stream Analysis

A waste stream analysis shows what is in each bin, not what a program assumes is there. Analyzing materials by type and location reveals which contaminants are causing problems and where they enter the stream. This information shows the business where to target corrective action.

2: Confirm Program Requirements

Recycling requirements vary by hauler, municipality, and facility. Confirm accepted materials, which items belong in other streams, and how empty or clean containers must be before they enter recycling bins. Clear, program-specific rules reduce wish-cycling and help employees avoid common recycling mistakes.

3: Improve Container Placement and Signage

Place recycling containers where employees dispose of waste, and make instructions specific to each program. Signs should show accepted materials and be visible at disposal points, with photos or simple visuals where useful. Businesses with multiple locations should use consistent signage across sites.

4: Train Employees and Service Partners

Include recycling procedures in employee onboarding, especially where staff turnover is high. Give employees consistent guidance on which materials belong in each container. Cleaning crews and service partners also need the same direction if they move or sort materials after disposal. Standardized training can keep programs consistent across locations.

5: Create Separate Programs for Problem Materials

Provide dedicated containers for batteries, electronics, plastic film, and other problem materials collected at the facility. Confirm which provider handles each material, then arrange a scheduled pickup, drop-off, mail-back program, or collection service.

Haulers can identify materials being flagged or rejected and explain the reason. Regular communication can address problems before they lead to recurring contamination or unexpected charges. Vendors can alert businesses to changes in accepted materials, program requirements, or service needs so signage, training, and collection practices stay current.
